How to frame a jigsaw puzzle

A finished puzzle looks great on the wall. The trick is keeping it flat and supported so pieces never drop out. Glue it first, then follow these steps.

1. Glue it first

Glue the puzzle front or back so it is one solid sheet. See how to glue a puzzle.

2. Measure the finished puzzle

Measure width and height in inches. Box sizes are approximate, and finished puzzles are often a little different, so measure the real thing.

3. Choose a frame

  • Exact fit: buy or order a frame whose opening matches your puzzle, or a poster frame one size up and trim a backing board to fit.
  • With a mat: a mat gives a gallery look. Order one with an opening about 1/4 inch smaller than the puzzle on each side so it overlaps the edges.
  • Puzzle frames: some frames are sold by puzzle piece count. Check your own measurements anyway.

4. Mount it on backing

Cut foam board or mat board to the frame size and attach the glued puzzle with double-sided tape or spray adhesive. This stops it sagging inside the frame.

5. Assemble and hang

Clean the glass or acrylic, place the mounted puzzle, close the back and use two hooks for anything large so it hangs level. Large puzzles are heavier than they look, especially with glass.

Tips

  • Acrylic is lighter and safer than glass for big frames.
  • Keep framed puzzles out of strong direct sun, which fades the print over time.

Frequently asked questions

What size frame do I need for a 1000 piece puzzle?

It depends on the puzzle: sizes vary by brand and shape. Measure your finished puzzle, then choose a frame with that opening or one size up with a mat.

Do you have to glue a puzzle before framing?

It is strongly recommended. Unglued pieces can slip and fall out of place inside the frame.
